Success story of Jake Cherry
Jake came to The Learning Shop soon after finishing Sixth Form in 2011; he was seeking employment and was keen to work in Bluewater. He was also attending the local Job Centre where he was referred to ‘Get into Retail’ scheme at The Learning Shop in partnership with The Princes Trust.
Jake attended the ‘Get Into Retail’ scheme, which was held over two weeks. During week one he learned about the ‘ins and outs’ of retail work and what to expect. Whereas week two was spent working hands on in a store in Bluewater. During the course Jake mentioned he had previously completed and enjoyed a week long work experience in ‘Republic’. The Learning Shop then reconnected him with Republic who then offered him to do another weeks’ work experience. This was very effective, Jake said:
“The Learning Shop staff’s determination to help me turned my seven days of work experience into a two year permanent job, only leaving due to the company closing down.”
After completing the course Jake used what he had learned and applied himself to new areas in retail; going from a street brand casualwear store to a luxury shirt maker. Jake really enjoyed the training and said it helped him to open up and become more confident. He recently came back to The Learning Shop to tell us about his experience:
“The Learning Shop was a huge factor in getting my first job. The Learning Shop didn’t stop at telling me how to get a job, but told me how to keep and enjoy one. Since finishing the course late into 2011, I have now worked in Retail for over five years. Looking back it’s hard to believe I was a shy as I was, I’ve gone from someone who nearly didn’t join the scheme for fear of having to speak, to someone who prides myself on customer service and will happily approach and engage with people both inside and outside of a working environment. I’ve led training sessions of my own and spoken in depth with area managers about how to improve the sections of the store that I was responsible store.”
Jake now has over 5 years of retail experience; including casual-wear stores; where his confidence grew, and a luxury shirt maker brand; where he was providing one-on-one personalised service to customers. He is now working full-time at a Thomas Pink concession in Bluewater.
