For those of you who are hoping to start a career in retail we know it can be hard to know where to start. The first piece of advice we can give you here is to think about your key skills and transferable skills.
If you have previously worked as a receptionist, for example, you must remember that this is still a form of customer service and customer facing role. There are A LOT of skills that are required in both hospitality and retail that can be transferred from other industries.
If you worked in retail as a school leaver, you still have the skills and they are still relevant, so make sure you put more emphasis or bio underneath that job compared to the others. It might have been a couple of jobs ago, but as long as it isn’t in a past life, it still counts!
Underneath your job roles, if you have bullet points or a little bio, think about the relevance of it. Does it relate to the job roles that you are applying for in any way even if you reword it? If not, then get rid of that bio/bullet points.
If you are unsure of what your key skills are, try talking to your peers or colleagues, ask them what they think you are good at, sometimes its hard to see all the things you are good at, not to mention your personal attributes that might be useful such as; bubbly, confident and chatty.
If you are still having trouble, can’t think of possible key skills OR you would like one of our experts to take a look once you have edited it, please book a consultation by contacting us at Learningshop@northkent.ac.uk Or call 01322 624 455.
