On Friday 26th April, The Bench café located in Kings Street Gravesend opened for business to the public. With an unconventional twist, Bench café customers pay what they can afford – or what they think a meal is worth.
This scheme, first of its kind in Kent, it will give sixteen local residents the fantastic opportunity to gain hands on experience working in a fully operational hospitality setting. The unemployed delegates had been referred from their local Jobcentre plus to the Learning Shop Bluewater to complete specialist Customer Service workshop World Host, these globally recognised programs were also used to train volunteers for the London 2012 Games and a Food Hygiene certificate.
Ben Gay Centre Manager said “The Bench Café is a brilliant idea; it is also a great platform to give jobseekers that much needed experience of working in a busy hospitality environment. We are delighted to be working with the team and supporting local people”.
